Despite this, they acknowledged the decision as a positive step. “We expected nothing less than ₦100,000, but at least it is a step in the right direction,” they stated.

In an announcement made on Wednesday during an interview with Channels Television, Sanwo-Olu confirmed that the new minimum wage for civil servants in Lagos is ₦85,000. He explained, “This isn’t a competition; it’s based on affordability and capacity. We understand that living in Lagos comes with higher costs, and we are aware of this reality.”

Sanwo-Olu also mentioned plans for potential future increases, stating his hope to raise the minimum wage to ₦100,000 in January, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring that residents have a living wage.

In a subsequent statement, Funmi Sessi, Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Lagos, described the wage approval as a timely and encouraging response to the country’s economic challenges. She reiterated that while the union had hoped for a higher wage, this move was still significant given Lagos’s unique financial pressures.

Sessi called for improved infrastructure, including alternatives to road transportation, and urged the government to enhance security on waterways, citing recent accidents that resulted in fatalities.

Ishola Adejumo, Chairman of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria, also commended the governor, highlighting the high cost of living in Lagos and the need for wages that reflect this reality. He urged the governor to maintain the BRT subsidy and other initiatives that support workers’ well-being.
