The healthcare sector in Yobe State has been adversely affected by the removal of fuel subsidies, inflation, and the escalating prices of medications influenced by foreign exchange, as stated by Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana, the Commissioner for Health in the state. Dr. Gana expressed these concerns during the validation of the operational guidelines for stakeholders of the Yobe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (YSCHMA) in Damaturu, the state capital.
Highlighting the challenges posed by the high cost of medicines, the Commissioner emphasized the state government’s commitment, through YSCHMA, to ensure that the financial payment mechanism covers the 200,000 people registered under the agency. He noted that clients registered in health facilities under the scheme have started expressing dissatisfaction with the rising medication costs. To address this issue, Dr. Gana called for a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Health, YSCHMA, and UNICEF to review the operational guidelines of the contributory scheme, aiming to enhance its effectiveness.
In response to the challenges faced by the healthcare system in Yobe State, stakeholders are urged to work together to find sustainable solutions and ensure the well-being of those covered by the contributory healthcare scheme.
