Speaking during the 2025 budget defense session with the House Committee on Works, Umahi urged lawmakers to consider increasing the ministry’s budget allocation for the fiscal year.
He appealed to the Committee to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration by borrowing additional funds to meet the country’s infrastructure demands.
“We plead with you to help us. ₦800 billion cannot solve our road challenges. It’s far from enough, so we ask for your support,” Umahi stated.
Highlighting the scale of road projects the ministry aims to tackle, Umahi emphasized that the current budget is inadequate. He stressed that borrowing to invest in infrastructure is vital for national development.
“When a nation faces a recession, borrowing for infrastructure is the way out. Infrastructure is the catalyst for economic growth, addressing hunger and creating opportunities across sectors. From food sellers to construction workers, the benefits will trickle down. Support Mr. President in borrowing funds to build infrastructure and make Nigeria great again,” Umahi urged.
In response, the Chairman of the Committee, Akin Alabi, assured the Minister that he would summon the Minister of Finance and the Head of the Budget Office to justify the ministry’s low budget allocation.
