Sullivan, now 61, was convicted in 1985 and sentenced to life without parole. He was freed in 2013 after advances in DNA technology revealed the truth, leading to the overturning of his conviction.

Earlier this month, Sullivan was granted $13 million in damages by a Massachusetts court. However, due to state regulations, compensation for wrongful convictions is capped at $1 million, which limits the payout he can receive.

During his wrongful imprisonment, Sullivan suffered immense personal losses, including the deaths of his mother and four siblings. In a statement, he acknowledged that while the financial compensation is appreciated, it “will never make up for the years stolen from me or the loved ones I lost while I was in prison.
