The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has expressed confidence that its proposed presidential candidate, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, can defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, said Makinde possesses the leadership qualities, experience, and national appeal needed to emerge victorious at the polls.
Yusuf stated that the APM had stepped up grassroots mobilisation across Nigeria and was witnessing a steady influx of new members, including prominent political figures, which he described as a sign of growing public confidence in the party.
He said Makinde has demonstrated the competence to tackle Nigeria’s security and economic challenges while delivering effective governance.
According to Yusuf, the governor’s track record of prudent resource management, inclusive leadership, and responsible governance in Oyo State makes him well-positioned to lead the country. He added that Makinde’s combination of experience, youthful energy, and ability to unite Nigerians across political, ethnic, and religious divides gives the party confidence of winning the 2027 presidential election.
Yusuf also argued that many Nigerians were becoming increasingly frustrated by the country’s economic hardship, rising insecurity, unemployment, and shrinking opportunities, insisting that the APM offers a credible alternative capable of addressing those concerns through practical solutions and compassionate leadership.
He further described Makinde as one of Nigeria’s best-performing governors, noting that his achievements in Oyo State have strengthened public confidence in his capacity to govern at the national level.
However, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the APM’s optimism, maintaining that President Tinubu remains well-positioned to secure a second term in office.
The APC’s Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, said opposition parties were free to field candidates but insisted that Makinde does not pose a major electoral challenge to the President.
Ibrahim argued that although Tinubu’s reforms faced criticism in their early stages, they were beginning to produce positive results that Nigerians would increasingly appreciate before the 2027 election.
He welcomed the APM’s calls for accountability from the APC-led Federal Government, saying accountability remains a core principle of the ruling party.
Ibrahim also said governors seeking higher office should be prepared to account for their own records in government, noting that both Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed would eventually be judged on their stewardship.
He concluded that Makinde’s political achievements could not be compared with Tinubu’s nationwide political influence and electoral strength.
