President Announces Project to Foster Trade and Tourism, Seeks Counterpart Funding
Tinubu Insists Landowners Will Receive Compensation; 700km Highway a Symbol of Unity
The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, stated that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will provide 30 million people with improved access to production and marketing centers. Tinubu made this announcement on Sunday in Lagos during the flag-off of the 700km Lagos-Calabar highway project and other initiatives to commemorate his first year in office.
He said, “Among the ten benefits of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway: during its construction, the road will create direct employment for thousands and indirect employment for tens of thousands more. Economic opportunities for millions are being unlocked. It will accelerate community development, bring growth closer to the people, and give 30 million people better access to production and marketing hubs. The ease of travel and free movement of people will be greatly enhanced.”
In March, the Federal Government began constructing the highway, which will span nine states with two spurs leading to the northern regions.
The project, which required the demolition of some buildings, faced significant criticism from Nigerians and the National Assembly, who believed the timing was inappropriate. Last Thursday, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, revealed that 750 houses along the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway had been marked for demolition. Umahi had previously announced N2.75bn in compensation for property owners affected by the proposed demolitions from channel 0 to channel 3 on the highway.
However, stakeholders have voiced concerns that the compensation does not adequately match their investments. Addressing the criticism on Sunday, the president appealed for public understanding, particularly from those whose properties and livelihoods would be affected by this landmark project.
He said, “I seek the understanding of the general public, especially those whose properties and sources of livelihood will be impacted by this iconic project. We must all make some sacrifices for our country’s growth. However, rest assured that this government is compassionate and will do its utmost to provide relief through compensation.”
