The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has seized 25 commercial and 15 private vehicles for operating illegal garages and causing significant road obstructions in areas including Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota in Lagos.

According to Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, this operation is aimed at restoring order and ensuring smooth traffic flow in these congested areas.

The crackdown, led by LASTMA’s Head of Enforcement, Mr. Kayode Odunuga, was carried out under the directives of Mr. Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation. It specifically targeted illegal garages notorious for disrupting traffic and inconveniencing residents and commuters.

Adebayo highlighted that these impoundments are part of a broader initiative by the Lagos State Government to improve the efficiency of the city’s transportation network. Mr. Giwa emphasized the government’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and maintaining public order on the roads.

“The existence of illegal garages has been a major challenge in our efforts to ensure smooth traffic flow in Lagos. These impoundments send a clear message that the state will not tolerate activities that disrupt public order and endanger citizens’ lives,” said Giwa.

Areas like Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota are notorious for traffic congestion due to unauthorized parking and makeshift garages, posing risks to pedestrians and obstructing vehicle movement. LASTMA’s intervention aims to alleviate these bottlenecks and improve overall traffic conditions in these critical zones.

Residents and business owners have expressed support for the government’s actions, anticipating positive impacts on daily activities. LASTMA assured the public that operations will continue and expand to other parts of the city plagued by illegal garage operations.

Authorities urge vehicle owners and operators to comply with traffic regulations to avoid penalties, emphasizing the government’s commitment to creating a safer and more livable environment in Lagos. They also encourage motorists to promptly report any abandoned vehicles to LASTMA.

This operation underscores the government’s determination to tackle traffic challenges and enhance urban mobility across Lagos.
