The arrest was confirmed in a statement by Dungus Abdulkarim, spokesperson for the Yobe State Police Command. According to the statement, Modu was apprehended on Sunday, October 20, 2024, around 6:30 PM, after the ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters in Damaturu received credible intelligence about a suspected gunrunner.
“The Command has successfully apprehended Hamsatu Modu, 54, of Morami Village, Jakana Konduga LGA, Borno State, for trafficking ammunition from Buni Yadi to Damaturu. On October 20, 2024, at about 6:30 PM, reliable intelligence regarding a suspected gunrunner en route to Damaturu led to the swift interception of a Golf 3 saloon car. A thorough search uncovered 350 rounds of live 7.62×39 mm ammunition concealed in the suspect’s luggage,” the police statement read.
The suspect is currently being interrogated as investigators work to uncover the criminal network and motives behind the trafficking activities.
Additionally, Garba Ahmed, the Commissioner of Police for Katsina State, emphasized the Command’s commitment to combating crime and urged community members to collaborate with security agencies. He encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest police station.
