The Ojude Oba festival, held annually at the Awujale of Ijebuland’s pavilion in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, demonstrated its potential to become a global attraction during its 2024 edition. The event, themed ‘Ojude Oba: Unity and Harmony, Our Gift’, drew Ijebu locals, the diaspora, and tourists who paid homage to the Awujale, Sikiru Adetona, amidst a spectacular display of Yoruba culture through elaborate attire, dance performances, and festive celebrations. Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed Ogun State’s commitment to elevate the festival’s international stature, highlighting its role in showcasing Ijebuland’s hospitality and traditions.
The Federal Government signaled its intention to nominate the festival as a UNESCO heritage event, underscoring its potential to diversify Nigeria’s economy beyond oil revenues. The Ojude Oba, known as The King’s Forecourt, is a cherished tradition among the Ijebu people, featuring colorful parades, horse riding, and communal dances during Eid-el-Kabir.
Despite sponsorship from local telecoms, real estate, and beverage industries, the state must intensify efforts to bolster tourism and stimulate economic growth. Security concerns, including recent incidents of violence along major highways, such as the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode Expressway, highlight the need for enhanced safety measures to safeguard residents, travelers, and tourists alike.
