In a statement issued in Lokoja on Monday and shared with journalists, Comrade Abdulraheem Okekenu, spokesperson for the Ajaokuta youths, emphasized that the River Niger serves as a natural boundary that cannot be disputed.
He urged the proponents of Okura State to immediately remove Ajaokuta Local Government from their proposed map, describing the inclusion as a potential trigger for chaos and crisis. Okekenu pointed out that Ajaokuta has historically not been affiliated with the eastern part of Kogi State, which is advocating for the new state.
Addressing the issue further, Okekenu questioned the sudden interest in including Ajaokuta after previously being excluded during historical territorial divisions.
He called upon President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to intervene swiftly by directing the National Assembly’s leadership to cease further actions on the matter. Additionally, he urged Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State to take immediate steps to prevent escalating tensions.
“This is a grave matter that demands serious attention. President Ahmed Bola Tinubu must step in immediately to halt this move,” Okekenu stressed. “At a time when the federal government is heavily investing resources to combat insurgency and banditry nationwide, it cannot afford to overlook potential crises.”
He also cautioned that while seeking the creation of a new state is a legitimate right, it should not infringe upon the rights and territorial integrity of others.
Previously, Hon. Sanni Egidi, a member of the House of Representatives, had opposed the inclusion of Ajaokuta federal constituency in the proposal to establish Okura State from Kogi. This came after Ibrahim Halims, the lawmaker representing Ankpa/Omala/Olamaboro federal constituency, presented a bill during a plenary session to create Okura State with Egume as its capital.
