There are concerns in some quarters about the ability of local government chairmen to manage newfound autonomy, while others worry that governors may seek to retain control indirectly.

Muazu Maifata, President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), expressed optimism about the ruling’s potential to catalyze rural development. He advocated for an increase in monthly allocations to local councils and emphasized the need for accountability and transparency.

Human rights advocate Auwal Gombe anticipated enhanced infrastructure, basic services, agricultural development, youth empowerment, and improved governance responsiveness at the grassroots level.

Psychologist Mcfrederick Edache stressed the importance of local governments addressing community needs without politicizing developmental projects such as water supply, electrification, healthcare, education, agricultural support, and youth empowerment.

Residents across Nigeria shared their expectations, highlighting hopes for improved living standards and enhanced governance effectiveness, particularly in rural areas where infrastructure has been neglected.

The Supreme Court’s decision is seen as a potential catalyst for significant development, contingent upon effective governance and accountability measures at the local level.
