On Friday, Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, disclosed that the ministry had approached the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to request that Air Peace be granted access to Heathrow, in accordance with the reciprocity principle of the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA).

Speaking at the 28th Annual Conference of the League of Airports and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) in Lagos, Keyamo criticized the unfairness of allowing British Airways unrestricted access to Nigeria’s busiest airport while Nigerian airlines are barred from similar access in the UK. The Nigerian ministry is still awaiting a response from UK officials.

Keyamo stressed the importance of honoring BASA commitments, warning that failure to do so could lead to retaliatory measures from Nigeria. He highlighted the imbalance in international flight operations, noting that airlines such as Air France, Lufthansa, Delta, and United Airlines operate numerous flights to Nigeria, whereas Nigerian airlines do not offer reciprocal services. Even South African Airways flies to Nigeria without a Nigerian counterpart in South Africa.

Air Peace currently operates flights to London but only to Gatwick, and is seeking access to Heathrow. Keyamo criticized the UK’s “slot committee” process and called for adherence to existing bilateral agreements.

He stated, “We have requested the UK to allow Nigerian carriers, particularly Air Peace, to use Heathrow Airport, just as British Airways operates from Lagos. If the UK continues to insist on slot committee approvals, we may suggest that British Airways be given flights to Ilorin. Air Peace is working towards Heathrow, and we expect that airport operators will honor our existing agreements.”

Keyamo further noted that access to Heathrow is preferred due to better codeshare opportunities and connectivity.
