The Nigerian government recently raided and shut down Povey’s bookshop at the Abuja headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). On Monday, the government charged ten Nigerians who participated in last month’s #EndBadGovernance protest in Abuja, alleging that they worked with the 70-year-old Briton to destabilize the country and called for military intervention against Tinubu’s government.

In a statement issued on the letterhead of his bookshop, Povey demanded the release of the detainees, asserting, “PROTEST IS NOT TREASON – release all the detainees!” He criticized the government for resorting to repression rather than addressing the grievances of the protesters. Povey highlighted that the protests, which sought to address issues of bad governance and hunger, had resulted in violence, with the police allegedly killing around 40 people, arresting thousands, and many still in detention.

Povey criticized the charges against the detainees, describing them as baseless and noting that many of the accused have little to no connection with each other. He pointed out that the accusations appear to be a misguided attempt to target the protest organizers, including individuals who were simply involved in organizing or supporting the demonstrations.

He also criticized the handling of the case, noting alleged inconsistencies and suggesting that the police are under pressure from higher authorities to maintain the case despite the lack of evidence. Povey detailed the inhumane treatment of detainees, including one individual who was reportedly tortured and beaten during detention.

Povey called on the NLC to extend its protective measures to all its members and the general public, emphasizing the need for solidarity in the face of what he sees as unjust repression.
