Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has approved a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for civil servants in the state. He stressed that the ₦70,000 minimum wage is the lowest amount any employee will receive, not an additional sum on top of existing salaries. The State Head of Service has been tasked with developing procedures for the disbursement of the new minimum wage.

“The minimum wage is not the same as a salary increase. It sets the lowest amount a worker can be paid. It’s important to understand that this is not an addition to current salaries but a new baseline,” Nwifuru explained.

The Governor also reaffirmed his commitment to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling on financial autonomy for local government councils, stating that he has never personally accessed local government funds and will ensure they manage their finances independently.

In related news, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged its state council leaders to fully implement the ₦70,000 National Minimum Wage Act, recently signed by President Bola Tinubu, or face consequences. The NLC has launched a training program to help leaders effectively negotiate and enforce the new wage.
