**Obaseki, who was relatively unknown in 2016, was thrust into office by his predecessor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who mobilized support for the “Obaseki project.” Throughout the campaign, Oshiomhole was the prominent figure, overshadowing Obaseki, whose speeches were notably brief. His main opponent at the time, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), even remarked on the lack of visibility from Obaseki. **This year’s election resembles a three-horse race similar to the 2023 presidential election, featuring PDP’s Dr. Asue Ighodalo, APC’s Senator Monday Okpebhelo, and Labour Party’s Mr. Olumide Akpata. While Akpata appears to be an independent candidate, Ighodalo and Okpebhelo benefit from strong support among established politicians.**

**Ighodalo and Okpebhelo hail from Edo Central, while Akpata comes from Edo South, which boasts a significant voter base. With 2,629,025 registered voters, Edo South leads with 1,526,699 voters, followed by Edo North with 673,794 and Edo Central with 440,514. Winning Edo South is crucial for any gubernatorial candidate, and Akpata is expected to perform well there.**

**Governor Obaseki’s support for Ighodalo has created friction within the PDP, as many primary contenders have since left the party. Ighodalo’s running mate, Osarodion Ogie, also hails from Edo South, while notable backers include elder statesman Owere Dickson Imasogie and former Governor Lucky Igbinedion. The Director General of the Asue/Ogie Campaign Management Council, Hon. Matthew Iduorikemwen, remains committed to mobilizing support for their campaign.**
