Sharing footage of the seized contraband, the agency’s spokesperson revealed that traffickers had modified the vehicle to evade detection, using hidden compartments to smuggle illegal substances across international borders.
He stated, “Without the intelligence and professionalism of NDLEA officers, who would have thought that removing a vehicle’s bumper would reveal a secret compartment built solely for drug trafficking? Another cartel dismantled!”
According to the NDLEA, four suspects were arrested in intelligence-led operations after operatives uncovered multi-million-naira worth of Tramadol pills hidden in false compartments within Toyota Sienna buses heading towards border towns.
The operation, which followed weeks of surveillance, led to the arrest of Zahradeen Adamu (27) and Abubakar Usman (44) in a vehicle traveling from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Yola, Adamawa State. A second Sienna bus, driven by Abba Usman (48), was also intercepted.
A thorough search of both vehicles revealed 190,960 Tramadol pills concealed in custom-made steel compartments behind the rear bumpers and the spare tyre sections.
Further investigations identified Kingsley Mbaeri, an Onitsha-based supplier, as the source of the illicit drugs. A follow-up raid on January 29 led to his arrest at his residence on Uga Street, Onitsha. Authorities also confiscated two vehicles—a Toyota Corolla (FGG 948 MF) and a Toyota Sienna (GWA 23 HH)—from his home.
