They raised concerns about the dangers of having students take exams at such late hours, especially given the current insecurity challenges in the country, and criticized the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for allowing this to happen.

The delay was caused by logistical problems and the late arrival of examination materials, forcing senior secondary students in Osun and other parts of the country to write the WASSCE English Language paper at night.

Julius Olufemi, a parent, told DAILY POST he was saddened that such an incident could occur in today’s Nigeria.

“My twins were scheduled to write the English paper on Wednesday. They had been at school at the scheduled time, but when I returned from my business, they were not at home. Since they attend a private school, I called the school proprietress who told me they hadn’t yet written the exam. I was shocked that at such a late hour they were still at school taking the paper. This has never happened before; I hope it never happens again,” he said.

Felicia Orji, another parent, shared how her son called her shortly after 9 pm to say he was just leaving his exam center.

“I was surprised because I wasn’t around—I had traveled. The call shocked me, and I stayed on the phone with him until he got home safely,” she said.

Ogunleye Jumoke narrated how her daughter initially returned home without writing any exam because the materials hadn’t arrived.

“Later that day, we were informed the materials had arrived and she was to return to school to write the exam. The school is quite far, and you can imagine the worry my husband and I felt. I even accompanied her and stayed until she finished the paper,” she explained.

Other parents have urged WAEC to prevent such occurrences in the future, calling the situation discouraging for parents and demoralizing for students.

Adebayo Oderinu, a journalist based in Osogbo, criticized the examination body, urging WAEC to be accountable and hold those responsible to account.

“First JAMB, now WAEC. Someone needs to be held responsible for this negligence,” he said.

Parent Oluwakemi Damilare asked Nigerians to keep the students in their prayers.

“As you prepare to sleep, don’t forget to remember our children still writing WAEC exams in your prayers,” she said.

Reports indicate that exams began around 8 pm in many schools across Osun, with parents gathered outside waiting for their children.
