In a brief statement shared on its official (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, December 15, the embassy emphasised that violations of US immigration laws carry severe and irreversible consequences.

“Visa fraud has serious consequences. Lying or providing fake documents can lead to permanent visa bans under US immigration law. This means you will never go,” the statement read.

The advisory forms part of the embassy’s ongoing public awareness campaign aimed at discouraging document falsification and misrepresentation in visa processes.

The warning was issued on the same day as a high-level diplomatic engagement between the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, and Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, in Abuja. Discussions at the meeting centred on deepening bilateral relations and addressing shared priorities.

In a follow-up message, the embassy reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to cooperation, stating that the United States looks forward to continued collaboration with Nigeria on matters of mutual interest.

The engagement also comes amid growing international scrutiny of Nigeria’s security situation. In recent months, US lawmakers have expressed concern over persistent attacks in the North and Middle Belt, characterising them as infringements on religious freedom.

Members of the US Congress have increasingly urged closer collaboration between both governments to safeguard vulnerable communities, particularly in the face of escalating insecurity, banditry and religiously driven violence.
