Controversy Erupts: Singer Omije Ojumi’s Family Refutes Fundraising Allegations, Promises Legal Fight

Femi Eretan, the singer’s brother-in-law, addressed guests during the service of songs and artistes’ night on Wednesday, condemning a viral video in which a self-proclaimed prophet alleged that the family was publicly seeking funds and calling on gospel artistes to conduct the burial.
Eretan strongly denied the claims and warned of legal action if no evidence is provided to substantiate them.
“I am from Ondo State and I understand the rudiments of the law. Anyone who claims the family begged for burial funds must provide proof,” he stated.
He also explained the circumstances behind the earlier cancellation of burial rites proposed by some colleagues in the gospel music community, noting that the family decided to handle the burial independently after disagreements arose.
According to Eretan, there is no internal conflict within the family, which remains united and composed, but “many people are crying more than the bereaved.”
He recounted that following Omije Ojumi’s death, the family promptly reached out to relatives from both her paternal and maternal lineages, as well as community elders. The family head, Wale Akinaanu, initially supported a proposal by some artistes to conduct the burial within a week, but the plan was abandoned due to his fragile health and the emotional strain at the time.
Subsequent family discussions led to the decision to manage the burial themselves.
Despite the controversy, Eretan expressed gratitude to artistes who honoured Omije Ojumi in their personal ways and showed support by attending the service of songs.
