The Principal Advisor for Global Religious Freedom, Mark Walker, issued a statement on Thursday through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs, urging the Nigerian government to respond quickly to the situation.

Walker described the attack as unacceptable and called for stronger security measures, especially as the Easter period approaches.

He stressed the need for urgent action, stating that while the Nigerian government has made efforts to improve security, the targeted killing of Christians—particularly during religious holidays—remains deeply troubling and must be addressed without delay.

The statement comes after renewed violence in Jos and nearby communities during Palm Sunday, where armed attackers reportedly targeted predominantly Christian areas, killing several people and injuring others.

The attacks disrupted religious observances at the start of Holy Week and heightened fears among residents.

According to local reports, the assailants stormed communities in the early hours of the day, firing sporadically and setting homes on fire, which forced many residents to flee for safety.
