The meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria.
In a statement, the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, explained that the invitation is intended to address developments that could threaten diplomatic relations between both nations.
According to the statement, the Nigerian government aims to formally express its deep concern over recent incidents capable of undermining the longstanding cordial ties between Nigeria and South Africa.
The ministry noted that discussions will focus on ongoing protests in South Africa, as well as reported cases of harassment of Nigerian citizens and attacks on their businesses.
While acknowledging rising anger among Nigerians, the government urged the public to remain calm.
It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Nigerians living in South Africa.
Reports indicate that xenophobic protests have intensified in several areas, including Pretoria, with migrants facing violence and intimidation.
Some cases reportedly involved attempts to force children of foreign nationals out of schools.
The unrest has allegedly resulted in fatalities, including the deaths of two Nigerians, heightening concerns within the diaspora.
Meanwhile, Cyril Ramaphosa has called on foreign nationals to comply with local laws while reiterating his government’s commitment to protecting human rights.
