In a statement shared via his social media handle on Sunday, Obi also drew attention to the various challenges confronting Nigeria, while outlining his vision for national unity and improved security. He emphasized that the primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property.

The statement read in part:

“Esteemed citizens of Nigeria,

It is with deep humility that I accept the responsibility of serving as the presidential candidate of our party. I sincerely appreciate the leadership of the party—His Excellency Seriake Dickson, the National Chairman, the National Secretary, members of the National Working Committee (NWC), and our dedicated supporters, as well as Nigerians who continue to sustain hope in a better future. I also acknowledge those who travelled from all parts of the country to gather in Abuja for this occasion.

I state clearly that a New Nigeria is possible. This belief unites us and must guide our actions moving forward, especially through the difficult journey ahead. This moment is not about personal ambition, but about the future of our nation and the generations to come. It is about restoring hope to millions of Nigerians who have endured hardship yet remain committed to the country.

At this critical point in our national history, uncertainty is widespread. Families worry about safety, parents fear for their children’s future, and many young people are increasingly uncertain about their prospects. Businesses are struggling, communities are under pressure, and trust in governance continues to decline. Yet, I remain optimistic about the resilience of Nigerians and firmly believe that a better nation is achievable.

UNITY

To build this New Nigeria, we must strengthen the foundations of national cohesion. Nigeria cannot make meaningful progress if it remains divided along ethnic, religious, regional, or political lines. Although we speak different languages and practice different faiths, we share one destiny under a single flag. Diversity should be seen as a strength rather than a weakness.

We must build bridges instead of barriers, foster trust instead of suspicion, and replace division with a shared sense of purpose. National unity is essential. As Will Durant once said, “A great civilisation is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within.” We must therefore remain united, heal our divisions, and move forward together.

INSECURITY

On security, Nigeria’s situation has significantly deteriorated. Global terrorism impact rankings placed the country as the 8th most affected in 2022, 6th in 2024, and 4th in 2026.

However, Nigeria once earned global recognition for its contributions to peacekeeping and regional stability. Nigerian troops have consistently demonstrated professionalism, courage, discipline, and compassion in difficult missions. They have played key roles in international peacekeeping operations, protecting civilians, monitoring ceasefires, restoring constitutional order, and supporting post-conflict recovery.

Nigeria has been among the leading African contributors to United Nations peacekeeping missions and has earned respect for its service in countries such as Rwanda, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Mali, Lebanon, Cambodia, Haiti, and Kuwait. At one point, Lieutenant General Isaac Obiakor (rtd) led global peacekeeping efforts.

We must confront insecurity with urgency and determination, as no nation can prosper when its citizens live in fear. The foremost duty of government is the protection of lives and property.
