The Obidient Movement has accused the Federal Government of allegedly using the judiciary to frustrate the political aspirations of its principal, Peter Obi, claiming recent court rulings affecting the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) form part of a broader effort to stop him from contesting the 2027 presidential election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The allegations were made on Monday during a press conference titled “The Road to Anarchy,” where the group described a recent court decision concerning the NDC as a troubling development that reflects what it called the growing “weaponisation of the judiciary” against opposition parties.

Speaking on behalf of the movement, its National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, alleged that legal action against the NDC was initiated only days after Obi joined the party.

According to Tanko, the timing of the suit was not coincidental but part of a deliberate attempt to prevent Obi from participating in the next presidential election.

“Just three days after Nigeria’s incoming president, Mr. Peter Obi, joined the NDC, a fictitious case was filed seeking to deregister the party,” he claimed.

He further alleged that the move was orchestrated by the current administration to keep Obi off the 2027 ballot.

The movement insisted it would oppose any attempt to prevent Obi from contesting the election through legal or political means.

The group also accused the judiciary of abandoning its constitutional responsibility to remain neutral, alleging that it had become increasingly influenced by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tanko warned that continued public distrust in the judicial system could have serious consequences for Nigeria’s democracy.

“When the courts lose public confidence, people are left with only the court of public opinion and the streets,” he said.

The movement further alleged that the government was shrinking Nigeria’s democratic space by using legal and institutional mechanisms to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It maintained that only Nigerians, through the ballot, have the constitutional authority to decide who governs the country, warning that limiting voters’ choices could heighten political tension.

The group encouraged its supporters to remain committed to the democratic process by registering and collecting their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

One of the speakers expressed confidence that Peter Obi would emerge as the NDC’s presidential candidate despite the ongoing legal challenges.

The movement stressed that the 2027 election must remain open and competitive, rather than becoming what it described as a one-party contest.

Responding to questions from journalists, an NDC representative disclosed that the party had already challenged the court ruling and was seeking an accelerated hearing as well as a stay of execution pending the outcome of the appeal.

He said the party had assembled a team of senior lawyers to pursue the matter in court and expressed confidence in its legal strategy.

During the briefing, the movement also accused the APC of undermining democratic institutions, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the judiciary and security agencies, alleging that the institutions were being used to weaken opposition forces.

Despite the claims, the movement reiterated its confidence that Obi would remain on the ballot in 2027 and vowed to continue pursuing all legal avenues to defend what it described as the constitutional rights of its members.

It concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain actively involved in the electoral process while urging the media and civil society organisations to continue promoting accountability and defending democratic values.
