Peter Obi Sparks Debate, Slams EFCC Probe Of Mama Pee And Randy Peter, Demands Crackdown On High-Level Graft
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to concentrate on combating large-scale corruption instead of targeting social media activists.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Obi made the appeal following the EFCC’s invitation of social media personalities Randy Peter and Mama Pee for questioning.
In a statement issued through the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), the former presidential candidate urged the anti-graft agency to channel its efforts toward investigating major financial crimes that have continued to impact the country’s economy.
The statement, signed on Thursday by POMR spokesperson Idris Zekeri, described the EFCC as a vital institution in Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign, stressing that its resources should be dedicated to tackling high-profile corruption cases rather than matters involving online commentators.
According to the statement, corruption remains one of the biggest obstacles to Nigeria’s economic development, infrastructure growth and public trust in government institutions. It therefore urged the commission to prioritise investigations involving the alleged diversion of public funds, financial mismanagement and other serious economic offences.
POMR noted that there has been a growing pattern in recent years of social media commentators, political activists and online critics being invited, questioned or detained over what it described as relatively minor or contentious issues.
While acknowledging that every citizen is subject to the rule of law, the group questioned whether committing substantial investigative resources to social media-related cases aligns with the EFCC’s core mandate.
The statement further warned that an excessive focus on online disputes could damage the commission’s public image and weaken confidence in its commitment to fighting corruption.
“When citizens begin to view the agency as an instrument for suppressing dissent or managing political narratives, public confidence in its mission is inevitably diminished,” the statement said.
POMR therefore urged the EFCC leadership to redirect its investigative capacity toward high-profile financial crimes, public sector corruption and other economic offences that have far-reaching consequences for the nation.
It added that the commission should steer clear of political or social controversies and remain focused on its primary responsibility of combating corruption across all levels.
