In a series of social media posts, Reno Omokri, a renowned critic and commentator, highlighted what he perceives as a glaring disparity in the public’s perception of church leaders based on their political inclinations. Referencing previous statements made by Pastor Williams Kumuyi of the Deeper Life Church, Omokri questioned the backlash received by the pastor for expressing optimism in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership. Omokri, in his usual candid style, pointed out, “Pastor Paul Enenche asked Nigerians to vote for Peter Obi, and you say he is a good pastor. Pastor Kumuyi said God will build Nigeria, and you say he is a bad pastor. Are we sure our leaders are really Nigeria’s problem and not we, the citizens?”

Highlighting the evident disparity in reactions from certain quarters, Omokri shared a video clip of Pastor Kumuyi expressing hope in Nigeria’s future under its current leadership. He captioned the video, “Can his critics tell us precisely what is wrong with what Pastor Kumukyi said here? In an evident bid to underscore his point on hypocrisy, Omokri then shared another clip featuring Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, suggesting the church’s more prominent role in governance. This was captioned, “Hypocrisy Is When You Curse Pastor Kumuyi For Believing in Nigeria and Praise Obi For Asking The Church To Take Over Nigeria.”
These remarks by Omokri have once again ignited debates on the ever-intersecting roles of religion and politics in Nigeria and the selective manner in which the public often receives the same.
