The Methodist Archbishop of Okigwe Archdiocese and Bishop of Okigwe, Most Rev. He criticized any such plea originating from an Igbo group, labeling it as baseless. According to him, Ohaneze Ndigbo, led by Chief Emanuel Iwuanyanwu or any responsible Igbo group, should not be begging Northern elders or a Niger Delta ex-militant who publicly wields AK-47s for Kanu’s release.

The Archbishop emphatically stated that Mazi Kanu had not committed any offense, as he had been acquitted of all charges brought against him by the competent courts in Nigeria. Thus, there is no justification for pleading with anyone for his release.

Describing Mazi Kanu as a hero and the voice of Ndigbo, Archbishop Onuagha asserted that Kanu’s only “crime” is advocating for the rights of the Igbo people and asserting their rightful place in Nigeria.

The Archbishop expressed bewilderment over the fact that more than fifty years after the Nigerian-Biafran Civil War, Ndigbo are still facing discrimination and mistreatment in Nigeria, despite being an integral part of the country.

He questioned the necessity of such pleas and the basis for them if Kanu had not committed any crimes for which he should be detained.
