In a statement released after their national gathering in Abuja on Friday, the forum emphasized the necessity for the federal government to reconfigure the nation and reinstate genuine federalism as originally enshrined in the 1960 and 1963 constitutions.
The communiqué asserted, “The nation is the collective heritage of all its citizens, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds or political affiliations.”
It further added, “The absence of restructuring leaves Nigeria’s future and democracy in a precarious state, necessitating immediate action.”
The forum expressed its concern that particular regions of the country have continuously faced marginalization in terms of the number of states, local governments, and appointments to the Federal Executive Council.
According to the statement, the pleas from South-East leaders for equitable representation in the Federal Executive Council, akin to other geopolitical zones, should be seriously considered.
The forum appealed to the federal government to promptly address the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), believing that such a move would contribute to peace and security in the South-East and the entire nation.
The meeting brought together leaders from prominent socio-cultural organizations, including Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-cultural group; Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization; the Pan Niger Delta Forum, and the Middle Belt Forum.
