Yakubu attributed these challenges to the rugged geographical terrain and insecurity arising from the actions of political figures in these regions.
He made these remarks during a meeting of the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security held in Abuja.
Furthermore, Yakubu called upon security agencies to address the security issues and ensure the safety of citizens during electoral processes.
He emphasized that Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi are among the more complex states in Nigeria for organizing elections due to their challenging geographic landscapes and the prevailing insecurity.
He noted that these challenges have been exacerbated by negative mobilization efforts by political actors, particularly since the start of public campaigning on July 14, 2023.
Yakubu’s message to politicians underscored the need for them to exercise control over their candidates and supporters, urging an end to violence and undemocratic activities such as vote buying, assaults on election officials, and disruptions of the electoral process.
He stressed that the primary responsibility for ensuring election security rests with the security agencies.
His message to these agencies emphasized the importance of taking resolute action against those involved in electoral violence.
Yakubu highlighted that this approach is the most effective means of creating a secure environment for the peaceful execution of elections and associated activities.
In this pursuit, security personnel assigned to electoral duties should maintain impartiality and adhere to established professional codes of conduct and rules of engagement.
