In a recent revelation, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has come under scrutiny for his administration’s expenditure, particularly in the realm of running the Office of the Governor. According to a state budget performance report, the governor utilized a staggering sum of N10,490,473,775.50 from the state treasury for office-related expenses between July and September 2023.
The report further discloses that from January to September 2023, the total amount spent on running the governor’s office surpassed N35 billion, excluding additional sundry expenses and activities documented in the report.
Notably, the budget performance report on Page 40 sheds light on another significant allocation, revealing that the Sanwo-Olu administration spent N11 billion on an intriguing category termed “servicing of meetings” during the same period. The actual amount recorded for this purpose is N11,449,295,411.71.
In contrast, public infrastructure projects within the third quarter of the year, as detailed on Page 42, indicate that N501 million was allocated for the “construction and provision of public schools,” and N1.5 billion was directed towards the “rehabilitation and repairs of public schools” during the same three-month period.
Governor Sanwo-Olu recently faced public backlash following revelations from state procurement records, including the approval of N7.5 million to replace liquid fragrance in his office and N3 billion for the purchase of rechargeable fans for his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat. The deputy governor, however, clarified that N2 million was paid to his office for the same facilities.
ent Agency (PPA) during the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2023 are outlined, featuring approvals such as over N440 million for a new Lexus LX 600 Bulletproof Sport Utility Vehicle for the Chief of Staff’s office and N152 million for the restoration of water supply at Iduganran palace, the official residence of the Oba of Lagos.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has faced criticism and calls for a review of these projects, with Funsho Doherty, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos, leading the charge. The governor, in response to the scrutiny, acknowledged that mistakes can occur in financial documentation but reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and public scrutiny of its spending.
