The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has expressed its readiness to welcome more defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, following the defection of 27 members of the State House of Assembly. Chibuike Ikenga, the spokesperson for the State APC Caretaker Committee, conveyed the party’s enthusiasm for the development, emphasizing that the influx of lawmakers into the APC would contribute to effective governance in the state……..CONTINUE READING
“In an earlier interview, I did mention that our doors are open to welcoming anybody who is willing to be part of us. We are happy about this (lawmakers’ defection), and we expect that others will join so that we can swell the ranks of the APC and run the state properly. The defection of the lawmakers is a welcome development,” stated Ikenga during an interview in Port Harcourt.
The defection of the 27 lawmakers, loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was attributed to the perceived division within the PDP. The lawmakers reportedly held a plenary session where the decision to defect to the APC was unanimously taken, amid heightened security at the Assembly complex along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt.
In response to the political shift, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara convened an emergency executive council meeting, currently in progress. The meeting, the 5th executive council gathering, is expected to address the implications of the lawmakers’ defection from the PDP to the APC. It comes after the 4th executive council meeting held on October 27, 2023, where four draft bills were approved.
The political landscape in Rivers State appears to be undergoing significant changes, and the APC remains optimistic about the potential for more defections, reinforcing its position for effective governance in the state.
