During the handover ceremony held in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of NDDC, emphasized that the distribution of these palliatives is a proactive response to the challenges faced by the local population, aiming to mitigate the recurrent effects of flooding in numerous communities.
Representing the Managing Director, Dr. Week Doodei, the NDDC Director of Procurement, and Godknows Alamieyeseigha, the Director of the Bayelsa State Office of the Commission, handed over the relief materials to community representatives. The items provided include food and household essentials, agricultural inputs, as well as livelihood items such as canoes, fishing nets, and hooks, among others.
Dr. Ogbuku reaffirmed the NDDC’s dedication to addressing the challenges encountered by the people of the Niger Delta region, acknowledging the irreplaceable losses suffered by flood victims. He stated, “We share in the pains of the victims of the flooding in Bayelsa State, and we assure you that the NDDC has very good programs for the people of the Niger Delta region.”
Emphasizing the comprehensive role of the NDDC, Ogbuku stated, “The NDDC is not only about building roads and physical infrastructure. We also intervene in social services.” He urged community representatives to ensure the equitable distribution of the materials and warned against hoarding or diversion.
The NDDC expressed its commitment to monitor the distribution process, ensuring that the relief items reach the affected areas. This intervention is part of the broader mandate of the NDDC to address pressing situations and challenges faced by communities in the Niger Delta region. The NDDC boss urged community leaders to prioritize vulnerable individuals during the distribution process and emphasized that hoarding or diverting the items would not be tolerated.
