Derico strategically used towns like Ụmụleri in Anambra and Agbor in Delta as hideouts, sending threatening letters to the police for killing his gang members. Believing in charms for protection, he boasted of invincibility, committing bank robberies, stealing millions, and killing ruthlessly. The peak of his violence was in December 2000 when he attacked a bus in Onitsha, robbing and killing passengers, leaving only four survivors.
Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju struggled to address the Derico menace, as he was believed to be invisible and couldn’t be arrested. In May 2001, “Operation Derico” was launched by the Anambra State Police Command. Despite arresting some of his men, including his bike driver Amobi, Derico continued his criminal activities.
With Derico eluding capture, Governor Mbadinuju sought the help of the Bakassi Boys in June 2001. They intensified efforts, raiding his Abuja residence and killing two of his associates. Derico, sensing danger, adopted a nomadic lifestyle, but the Bakassi Boys received a tip-off, leading to his eventual arrest.
On July 3, 2001, the Bakassi Boys laid an ambush at the Head Bridge in Onitsha and captured Derico. Despite the Nigerian Police requesting his release, the Bakassi Boys, mistrusting the police, decided to handle the case themselves. Six days later, on July 9, 2001, Derico was publicly executed at the Ọchanja Market junction. He pleaded for mercy, but the Bakassi Boys beheaded him, and his body was mutilated and set on fire. The chase and capture of Derico inspired the Nollywood movie “Derico.”
