The governors of Bauchi, Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara have already found themselves in legal proceedings, awaiting judgments from five-member panels of the Supreme Court. The court premises, located within a restricted three-arm zone, have been tightly secured by armed operatives, preventing party supporters from approaching. Access has been limited to lawyers on approved lists and accredited journalists who undergo thorough scanning and searches.
A five-member panel, led by Justice Inyang Okoro, has approved two cases for judgment after the parties presented their arguments. The cases were brought before the court by candidates of the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the governorship elections held on March 18. The appellants, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and Abdulazeez Adediran (Jandor), seek to challenge the declaration of Sanwo-Olu as the valid winner of the Lagos State gubernatorial election.
The LP and its candidate, Rhodes-Vivour, argue in their notice of appeal that Sanwo-Olu’s qualification to contest is in question, citing the dual citizenship of his deputy, the late Obafemi Hamzat, who held citizenship in the United States. The appellants contend that the deputy governor’s constitutional ineligibility to contest renders Sanwo-Olu’s candidacy invalid.
Governors Yusuf of Kano and Muftwang of Bauchi, representing the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) respectively, aim to overturn the Appeal Court judgments that removed them from office.
The governors of Zamfara, Cross River, Bauchi, and Abia are now pinning their hopes on the Supreme Court to affirm their election victories and dismiss petitions seeking to unseat them. The legal battles underscore the complex and contentious nature of Nigeria’s electoral landscape.
