The economic strain on many Nigerians has intensified following President Bola Tinubu’s decision to end the fuel subsidy and unify the exchange rate in 2023, contributing to soaring inflation rates.

The most recent protest occurred on Monday in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State, underscoring the growing discontent among the populace. Addressing the Senate on Tuesday, Akpabio noted that the protesters may not fully grasp the efforts made by both the Senate and the Federal Government to alleviate these economic challenges.

Akpabio stated, “You can see a lot of sponsored protests here and there, but those people are not aware—most of those sponsored protesters are not aware of the kind of efforts made by this Senate to tackle the situation together with the management team of the federal government.”

He went on to mention unverified reports indicating that state governments have received an additional N30 billion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in the last few months, outside their regular allocations from the federation account, to assist in addressing the food situation.

Akpabio urged state governments to utilize the funds received to ensure the availability of food. He assured that the national assembly would not approve anything that does not benefit the citizens. The protests coincide with a series of economic measures aimed at addressing the country’s financial challenges.
