During a recent episode of his television show, Harvey emphasized, “People allege that Burna Boy stole from us, but in reality, it is we who have taken from Burna Boy. Africans provide the beats, soul, rhythm, and diligent effort that fuel our creativity.”

It is noteworthy that Burna Boy clarified in an interview with Apple Music last year that he does not adhere strictly to the popular West African music genre, Afrobeats. Instead, he defines his music as Afrofusion, blending elements of American hip-hop, R&B, soul, Jamaican reggae and dancehall, and African music.

At the 66th Grammys, Burna Boy made history by being nominated in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category, marking the first time an African artist has been recognized in this genre, traditionally dominated by Western artists. Despite not winning the award, with Lil Durk clinching the honor, some factions in the West alleged that Burna Boy was attempting to co-opt Western musical styles.
