Falana Appeals To Tinubu-Led Government To Reconsider Fuel Subsidy Decision....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), is urging the Bola Tinubu-led government to reconsider its policy on fuel subsidy removal amidst allegations that the country is still shouldering the subsidy burden. In a statement titled “Fuel Subsidy again?” released to the press on Sunday, Falana emphasized the need for the federal government to review the decision, rather than urging Nigerians to endure the prevailing hardship.

According to the statement, President Bola Tinubu, during his inauguration, declared an end to the subsidy era, leading to a nationwide hike in petroleum prices. However, recent claims by the World Bank and Pinnacle Oil and Gas Limited’s CEO, Mr. Robert Dickerman, suggest that the Federal Government is still subsidizing the product. Notably, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited has not refuted these serious allegations.

The statement highlighted the absence of provisions for fuel subsidy in the 2023 and 2024 Appropriation Acts, urging the government to promptly confirm or deny the allegations. Falana called for transparency surrounding fuel importation from foreign countries, emphasizing the need to end the opacity.

The statement also drew attention to the contradiction of the government’s previous announcement of subsidy removal while spending N11 trillion on “under-recovery” within an 8-year period after the removal.

In conclusion, Falana stressed that if the federal government is indeed spending a significant amount on fuel subsidy monthly, it is imperative to review the policy for the benefit of the Nigerian people, rather than urging them to endure ongoing hardships caused by subsidy removal.
