Immigration Authority’s Reinforcement: 30 New Vehicles To Strengthen Border Patrol
The Nigeria Immigration Service announced on Friday its initiative to enhance border security operations through a comprehensive restructuring of its formations. Mrs. Kemi Nandap, the newly-appointed Comptroller-General of Immigration, made this declaration during the inauguration of 30 operational vehicles for border surveillance and patrol at the NIS headquarters in Abuja, presided over by Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior.
Nandap highlighted the significance of this investment in border security, affirming plans to revamp the border corps architecture. This restructuring includes the deployment of agile sector commanders tasked with conducting consistent surveillance and patrols along Nigeria’s borders, aligning with the service’s core mandate.
This strategic move comes against the backdrop of the recent reopening of Nigeria’s border with Niger Republic amidst escalating terrorist activities, particularly in the northern regions. Incidents of violence, including killings and kidnappings, have surged, prompting urgent calls for enhanced security measures, including the establishment of a multi-level policing system such as state police.
Reports from Kaduna State alone depict a grim picture, with over 450 casualties attributed to terrorist attacks and abductions within the past month. The alarming trend extends to other regions, evidenced by incidents like the mass abduction of pupils and teachers from schools and the kidnapping of internally displaced persons from camps.
Nandap underscored the pivotal role of robust border surveillance and patrol in safeguarding national sovereignty, protecting citizens, preserving economic prosperity, and facilitating lawful migration. The procurement of 30 surveillance vehicles signifies a tangible investment in bolstering the service’s operational capacity, equipping dedicated officers with essential tools to fulfill their duties effectively.
Furthermore, Nandap reaffirmed the service’s unwavering commitment to border security, aiming to outpace those attempting to subvert Nigeria’s laws and jeopardize its safety. She emphasized that enhanced mobility afforded by these vehicles would empower border patrol teams to detect and deter illegal activities, including migrant smuggling, human trafficking, and other transnational crimes, thereby fortifying Nigeria’s borders against external threats.
