INEC Issues Statement, Clears Air On Non-Involvement In Labour Party’s Convention....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
INEC has made it clear that it was not involved in the Labour Party (LP) National Convention held in Nnewi, Anambra state on Wednesday, March 27.
Sources within INEC emphasized that the electoral body cannot recognize the convention due to its lack of involvement. Earlier reports from LIB had indicated the re-election of Julius Abure as the chairman of the party during the Nnewi convention.
Prior to the convention, LP National Legal Adviser, Kehinde Edun, asserted that the party had duly informed INEC about the change in venue and date.
Edun stated, “No, it is holding in Anambra. Nnewi to be precise, not Umuahia in Abia State again. In fact, Umuahia was not even the first venue we chose. Benin was the first choice before we changed to Umuahia and now Nnewi. So, we are at liberty to pick any venue of our choice. We only need to inform INEC about the change in venue and the time.”
According to Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, political parties are mandated to give INEC at least 21 days’ notice of any convention, congress, conference, or meeting. This includes gatherings convened for purposes such as “merger,” electing members of executive committees, governing bodies, or nominating candidates.
