Anambra Government Probes Alleged Murder of 69-Year-Old Widow by Stepson
The Anambra State Government has initiated an investigation into the purported homicide of Ifeoma Philomena Ajuluchukwu, a 69-year-old widow, allegedly at the hands of her stepson. Hon Ify Obinabo, the State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, disclosed this in a statement released on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. The incident reportedly occurred in Ojoto, Idemili South council area of the state, where the widow was said to have been brutally assaulted by her stepson, Chiugo Emmanuel Ajuluchukwu, leading to her demise.
According to Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the commissioner, the matter surfaced following a communication from the deceased’s son, Onyebuchi Christopher Ajuluchukwu, to the ministry. Onyebuchi revealed that his late father had two wives, with only his mother residing with him, while the first wife had remarried long ago and settled in Port Harcourt. However, upon the demise of the first wife, Chiugo Emmanuel Ajuluchukwu, his stepbrother, who was raised by his own mother, allegedly harbored animosity towards their mother, disrupting her peace in the family compound.
Reportedly, the conflict escalated when Chiugo attempted to bury their mother in the family compound, a decision unopposed by anyone. This prompted him to start dismantling the roof of their mother’s room and allegedly subjecting her to physical assault, despite her ailing health. It was during one of these assaults that neighbors intervened and rushed the widow to the hospital, where she tragically passed away.
Onyebuchi Ajuluchukwu appealed to the government for intervention, seeking justice for his late mother and urging for a resolution to the ongoing family discord, exacerbated by Chiugo’s alleged use of various security means to harass him and his siblings due to financial differences.
In response, Commissioner Obinabo assured Onyebuchi of a thorough investigation into the matter, promising justice for his deceased mother. She sternly warned that any mistreatment of widows within the state would be met with legal consequences, emphasizing the enforcement of laws against such acts.
Furthermore, Obinabo encouraged the public to promptly report any criminal activities within and beyond their communities to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens in the state.
