The Abia State House of Assembly has expressed its dissatisfaction with the conduct of the Abia State Command of the Nigeria Police regarding sanitation exercises in the state, particularly at the Umuahia Central Police Station and the Area Command. He remarked, “I noticed a significant improvement in compliance compared to last month. However, I was alarmed by the actions of the Nigeria Police at the Umuahia Central Police Station, where they have been renting a private bus to arrest sanitation defaulters.”

Nwoke criticized the police for not bringing the offenders to the mobile sanitation court established by the Abia State Government for adjudication. Instead, he claimed they detain the defaulters at their stations and extort varying amounts of money, ranging from N10,000 to N25,000, depending on each individual’s negotiation skills before releasing them.

In response, Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, the Commissioner for Environment, represented by the Director of Environment, Rev. Joseph Udechukwu Ukachukwu, noted that many police officers were acting as escorts for passengers.

Abia State Police Public Relations Officer Maureen Chilaka stated that the command would investigate the allegations and provide the necessary guidance following their inquiry.
