Abia Ex-Commissioner Expresses Frustration Over Repeated EFCC SummonsDr. Philips Nto, the former Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development in Abia State, has voiced his frustration over what he describes as “unending harassment” from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Currently a lecturer at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Nto is urging the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to review his case file and clarify the allegations he faces. He questions why the EFCC continues its investigation without moving forward to court.

Having served under former Governor Theodore Orji from 2013 to 2015, Nto recently received yet another text message from the EFCC, demanding his presence in Abuja on short notice to discuss unspecified “grey areas.” He expressed particular frustration with the pattern of last-minute summons, often occurring at the end of each year. Although he requested a week to prepare and to meet at the EFCC’s Enugu office, his request was denied, with threats of arrest if he did not comply.

Nto challenged the EFCC to either bring formal charges or conclude the investigation, emphasizing his readiness to defend himself in court, as he maintains a clean record from his time as finance commissioner. He also raised concerns for his safety, alleging that the EFCC has unnecessarily threatened him despite his consistent compliance over the years.

“I am a lecturer at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. My house is not hidden, and I have always responded to their invitations. I don’t see the urgency in giving me less than a day to travel to Abuja from Umuahia,” he lamented.

He called on EFCC Chairman Ola Olukayode to address the conduct of his officers to prevent further damage to his reputation, advocating for adherence to the rule of law in the commission’s operations. “The current military-style of operation is antithetical to democratic ethos,” Dr. Nto concluded, urging the EFCC to uphold due process.
