It is important to note that this revelation comes after controversies surrounding Arise Tv’s erroneous portrayal of Nigerian youth as drug peddlers and scammers. Abike Dabiri-Erewa’s intention in shedding light on this matter is to highlight the troubles that some Nigerians have unfortunately found themselves in while residing in Asian countries.

Several countries in Asia have strict policies and laws regarding drug trafficking and peddling. While the specific details and levels of enforcement may vary, the following countries are generally known for having a zero-tolerance approach toward drug peddlers:

  1. Singapore: Singapore is renowned for its stringent anti-drug laws and zero-tolerance policy towards drug offenses. Drug trafficking carries a mandatory death penalty, and even possessing small amounts of illicit substances can result in severe punishments.
  2. Indonesia: Indonesia has strict anti-drug laws and imposes harsh penalties for drug-related offenses. Possession, trafficking, and production of drugs can lead to long prison sentences, heavy fines, and in some cases, the death penalty.
  3. Malaysia: Malaysia has rigorous laws against drug offenses, and the country has adopted a tough stance on drug peddling. Drug trafficking can result in severe penalties, including mandatory death sentences.
  4. Philippines: The Philippines has pursued an aggressive anti-drug campaign under President Rodrigo Duterte. While the methods and human rights implications of this campaign have been subject to controversy, the country maintains a strict approach towards drug peddling, with law enforcement conducting raids and operations targeting drug suspects.
  5. China: China has some of the most severe penalties for drug offenses in Asia. Drug trafficking can lead to lengthy prison sentences, life imprisonment, or even the death penalty, depending on the quantity and type of drugs involved.
  6. Thailand: Thailand has strict laws against drug offenses, including drug peddling. Penalties for drug trafficking can include lengthy prison sentences and heavy fines.

It is a regrettable fact that Nigerians have faced permanent bans in various Asian countries, such as China, Bangladesh, and the United Arab Emirates, due to involvement in drug peddling. Additionally, India is expected to soon implement a similar ban, and during the Sudanese Chaos, Ethiopia refused entry to Nigerians due to concerns about drug-related issues. These incidents serve as evidence of how certain Nigerians, in their pursuit of better opportunities, have contributed to the pollution of certain areas with illicit drugs.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, speaking on Sunday, disclosed the distressing news that some Nigerians are currently facing the death penalty in Indonesia. Despite efforts by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) to request clemency, their appeals were rejected, as the Indonesian legal system strictly adheres to its own laws.

In her words, she wrote; “21 on death row. We visited them to beg for leniency. But they said their law is their law . 4 have been execute. 3 Nigerians and 1 Indonesian.”
