In a twist, Oyeneye opted for a guilty plea under a plea bargain agreement, humbly requesting leniency from the court. Justice Aliyu Shafa, in delivering the verdict, cautioned Oyeneye against repeating such offenses and urged him to exhibit good conduct.

Providing an alternative to imprisonment, Justice Shafa offered Oyeneye the option of paying a fine of N200,000. Furthermore, the judge ruled that the tools employed for the fraudulent activity be forfeited to the Federal Government.

Oyeneye, expressing remorse, vowed to reform his ways, attributing his actions to desperation borne out of hunger.

The modus operandi of Oyeneye’s scheme involved assuming the identity of “Maddiegrace” on his Instagram account, using a photo of a woman from Texas, US, as his profile picture. Through electronic messages, he targeted unsuspecting white men, including individuals named Kacy Reed, Robert Kimble, and Kelvin Adams. These men, misled by Oyeneye’s false representations, suffered a financial loss totaling $200.

The prosecution, represented by Mr. F.O. Dibang, outlined Oyeneye’s activities spanning from January 2023 to October 2023, emphasizing the gravity of his fraudulent endeavors.

The court was informed that Oyeneye signed the plea bargain agreement on May 3, as disclosed by the prosecution counsel during proceedings.

It’s clear that Oyeneye’s actions violated Section 321 of the Penal Code and are punishable under Section 324 of the same code. As justice is served, it serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in fraudulent activities.
