The demonstration took place at the NMCN’s office in Abuja, in response to the council’s circular issued on February 7, 2024, which revised the guidelines for certificate verification for nurses and midwives. This move followed the deactivation of the verification portal on the NMCN’s website reported by The BUSHRADIOGIST in December 2023.
According to the circular signed by Dr. Faruk Abubakar, the Registrar of the council, applicants are required to pay a non-refundable fee for verification to foreign nursing boards, covering courier services to the applicant’s training institution, workplace, and the foreign board. Eligible applicants must have a minimum of two years post-qualification experience, and those with provisional licenses will be rejected. The council will request a letter of good standing directly from the applicant’s place of work and nursing training institution. The guidelines also mandate active practicing licenses with a minimum of six months to expiration, and the verification process is slated to take a minimum of six months, effective March 1, 2024.
During the protest, nurses and midwives gathered at the NMCN office, singing and displaying placards with messages addressing issues like unemployment among nurses, quackery, nurses’ welfare, and expressing opposition to the verification rules. Some of the placard inscriptions included, “Address unemployment among nurses,” “Address quackery,” “Protect nurses, protect healthcare,” and “#No to verification rules.”
The nurses emphasized their ongoing challenges and urged the NMCN to reconsider the new guidelines. The situation is developing, and further details are expected to emerge.
