The controversy arose following INEC’s declaration, through Acting Secretary Haliru Aminu, that it did not monitor the convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, as requested in a recent inquiry. This announcement fueled tensions amid ongoing disputes between Abure’s faction and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Edun clarified the situation, emphasizing that the absence of INEC monitoring does not undermine the convention’s legality. He criticized what he called a misinterpretation of INEC’s response, noting that the law does not mandate INEC’s presence at party conventions for their validity. He further condemned what he described as dishonest attempts to manipulate public perception by parties opposed to Abure’s leadership.
