Advocacy Organization Warns Against National ID Card Initiative, Alleges Financial Burden On Nigerian Population....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Human Rights Writers Association (HURIWA) has vehemently opposed the federal government’s proposal to introduce new national ID cards for Nigerians, denouncing it as a wasteful expenditure of public funds. According to HURIWA, recent findings reveal that half of Nigeria’s population remains financially excluded and unable to access banking services due to severe poverty. The organization views the government’s plan for a new ID card as part of a dubious agenda.

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, expressed skepticism about how the 133 million impoverished Nigerians could be expected to maintain active bank accounts to acquire the proposed single National ID. The group asserts that this initiative is merely a ploy to siphon vast sums of public money into the offshore accounts of political elites and their associates.

Calling upon President Bola Tinubu’s administration to halt the scheme, HURIWA criticizes the potential burden it places on Nigerians, who would endure long queues and endure harsh weather conditions to access their banks for the new ID card. The organization argues that assuming all Nigerians possess functional bank accounts is flawed logic.

HURIWA contends that the new national ID card scheme serves as a conduit for those in power to channel public funds to their personal networks, rather than benefiting the populace. Instead, the group advocates for the prioritization of the International Passport as the primary form of identification.

In light of these concerns, HURIWA urges the government to reconsider its approach and focus on policies that genuinely serve the interests of the Nigerian people.
