In his remarks, Governor Makinde assured that his administration would continue to provide the necessary resources and a conducive environment for the judiciary to effectively carry out its duties. The newly appointed judges took their oaths of office and allegiance, as well as the judicial oath, in a ceremony held at the executive council chamber of the governor’s office, Ibadan.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the governor highlighted that the appointments were made purely based on merit, without any interference from the executive branch.
Makinde praised the cooperative relationship between the three arms of government in the state, which he said has been essential for delivering the benefits of democracy to the people. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to enforcing the rule of law and ensuring Oyo State continues to prosper as a place of law-abiding citizens.
“The state government’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring progress for our citizens requires the collaboration and commitment of judicial officers,” Makinde said. He urged the new judges to perform their duties impartially, without fear or favor, stressing that the public looks to them for protection of their rights and fair access to justice.
Referring to the recent approval by the National Judicial Council (NJC) for the appointment of the judges, Makinde added, “This appointment is in accordance with sections 211 and 281 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended. It is a reminder of how democracy functions and the critical balance of power between the three branches of government.”
He pointed out that the legislature makes the laws, the judiciary interprets them, and the executive enforces them. “When all three arms work in harmony, we foster a progressive society,” the governor said, noting that this collaboration has been evident since 2019 in Oyo State.
Governor Makinde also expressed pride in the diversity of the new appointees, which includes private legal practitioners from both Oyo and Lagos States, as well as an Associate Professor from Iwo, Osun State. He reiterated that the state remains open to identifying and nurturing talent from across the country to contribute to its development.
