Fagbemi expressed concern that the laws of the federation have not been updated since 2004, highlighting the need for a dynamic legal framework that adapts to evolving societal needs. Speaking in Abuja at the committee’s inauguration, he emphasized the importance of this task in promoting legal clarity and consistency.
The committee, chaired by Mr. Olawale Fapohunda (SAN) and co-chaired by Prof. Jummai Audi, Chairman of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission, is expected to complete its work within four months. Their responsibilities include coordinating the collection and compilation of laws up to 2024, identifying outdated statutes, and merging related laws to eliminate redundancy.
Fagbemi urged the committee to focus on contemporary needs and values, harmonizing conflicting laws for uniformity. He framed this effort as part of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to promote legal reforms that support socio-economic growth.
Highlighting the importance of the project, Fagbemi stated, “The general purpose of the law is to protect the public interest and regulate human interactions.” He acknowledged the need for continuous legal reform to address modern socio-economic challenges and improve the administration of justice.
The Attorney General thanked the committee members for their willingness to undertake this significant task and expressed gratitude to various stakeholders, including the National Assembly and the Nigeria Law Reform Commission, for their support. He assured the committee of the ministry’s ongoing assistance to help them achieve their goals.
