At a public hearing on frequent grid collapses, NERC Chairman Sanusi Garba highlighted the significant impact of grid failures on both the quality of electricity supply and the financial viability of power generation and distribution companies. He emphasized the urgency of stabilizing the national grid to improve its reliability.
Garba pointed out that minor equipment failures can lead to widespread blackouts, questioning the adequacy of protective measures for crucial equipment. He noted that recent incidents, including large transformers catching fire, suggest a lack of effective solutions to prevent such occurrences. He criticized Discos for failing to identify vulnerable feeders despite being given deadlines to report on those susceptible to weather-related issues.
Joy Ogaji, CEO of the Association of Power Generation Companies, reported that Nigeria has experienced 162 grid collapses since 2013. She stressed the need for the commission to proactively address these issues and improve transparency and data accuracy within the sector.
Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria has received a security advisory from the Office of the National Security Adviser, which limits its operations in areas affected by vandalism of the Shiroro-Mando Transmission line. The ongoing insecurity has resulted in prolonged power outages in the region, exacerbated by the recent vandalization of the Ugwuaji-Apir 330-kilovolt transmission line, leaving several northern states without power for over four days.
