Dr. Ndueso defended Governor Umo Eno and his predecessor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, who initiated the establishment of the JSM company, stating that criticism of their role in the suspension was unjustified. He emphasized that the challenging business environment in Nigeria, characterized by economic downturn, was responsible for the exodus of multinational companies from the country.

JSM, inaugurated in 2017 by former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, announced on January 3, 2024, that it was temporarily suspending operations due to unforeseen circumstances affecting business operations in Nigeria. Despite criticism targeting the governor and his predecessor for the company’s exit, Dr. Ndueso argued that such remarks were politically motivated and failed to consider the broader economic challenges faced by businesses nationwide.

He pointed out that other major companies, including GSK Plc, Nigeria’s second-largest drug producer, and Unilever, renowned for brands like OMO, Sunlight, and Lux, had also ceased operations due to the harsh business environment in the country. Dr. Ndueso highlighted the economic crisis triggered by the removal of fuel subsidies, impacting foreign exchange rates, import duties, and interest rates, leading to the closure of numerous businesses across Nigeria.

Addressing another point of criticism related to the construction of an international worship center in Uyo, Dr. Ndueso defended the government’s decision, emphasizing the predominantly Christian population in Akwa Ibom State. He argued that before the worship center’s construction, devoted Christians in the state gathered in less conducive environments for religious activities. Dr. Ndueso dismissed objections to the use of funds for the worship center, comparing it to iconic structures such as the Statue of Liberty in the United States, which also serve non-economic purposes but contribute to cultural and religious significance.

In conclusion, Dr. Ndueso defended the state government’s actions, asserting that the economic challenges faced by JSM and other companies were symptomatic of the broader national economic crisis, and criticized arguments against the worship center construction as unfounded and overlooking its potential benefits to religious tourism in Akwa Ibom State.
